Growing power demand in remote communities on Senja
Situated in Norway’s Arctic, Senja Island is home to two main communities of around three hundred residents, primarily relying on the fishing industry for livelihood.
Growth in the fishing industry and increasing household electricity demand placed additional pressure on the local power grid. With limited capacity available in the existing grid, a solution was needed to support growing demand without relying solely on conventional grid expansion.

Managing growing demand within limited grid capacity
Key challenges included:
- Growing demand from the fishing industry and households
- Limited capacity in the existing local grid
- Further business expansion increasing future demand
- A need to explore cost-effective ways of managing electricity consumption
Husøy and Senjahopen are located at the end of the local power grid, where increasing electricity demand from fish processing and other local activity placed additional requirements on grid capacity and voltage stability.
Further business development was expected to increase demand on the local grid. Expanding the grid would require significant infrastructure investment, so alternative ways of managing local capacity and electricity demand were evaluated. Battery energy storage was identified as one way to reduce peak loads and make better use of the existing grid.

Battery energy storage as a local grid buffer
To address these challenges, grid operator Arva AS implemented a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to provide local grid support at Husøy and Senjahopen.
The battery energy storage system acts as a local energy buffer. It stores energy during periods of lower demand and releases it when demand increases, helping reduce peak loads and pressure on the existing grid. This supports grid stability while making better use of available grid capacity.

Collaboration from delivery to long-term operation
Smart Senja was delivered in collaboration between Arva AS, Rolls-Royce Power Systems and BOS Power. BOS Power was responsible for system integration of the battery containers and transformers, including design, project management and delivery.
The solution comprises three mtu EnergyPack units installed at Husøy and Senjahopen. BOS Power also provides long-term support through a 10-year Service Level Agreement, covering the continued operation and maintenance of the energy storage systems.
