Introduction

EcoDataCenter is a Swedish data center company founded in 2014, providing sustainable and secure data center solutions in the Nordic region.

With a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability, EcoDataCenter needed a reliable partner to support its critical data center infrastructure and long-term capacity requirements.

Requirements for an emergency power partner

When EcoDataCenter started their search for a supplier of an emergency power solution in 2016, they were looking for more than just a supplier of products and services.

They were seeking a true partnership that would challenge them, inspire improvement, and provide the necessary support for their operations.

Key traits they sought in a partner included reliability, local presence, system integration capabilities, high-quality products, and efficiency.

An important requirement was a partner that could respond flexibly to EcoDataCenter's needs while also challenging technical decisions when appropriate.

The challenge:

Building A Resilient Data Center Infrastructure

EcoDataCenter required an emergency power system that could support continuous data center operations while meeting demanding requirements for reliability, availability and scalability. The company also needed access to technical expertise and integrated project delivery.

The expansion plans for their Falun data center, EcoDataCenter 1 presented an opportunity to find such a partner who could offer an emergency power solution that not only met their immediate requirements but also provided scalability, flexibility, and capacity for future expansion.

Key requirements for the project:
  • Continuous uptime. Data center operations cannot tolerate unexpected power interruptions.
  • Redundancy. The power architecture must provide reliable backup capacity when individual components or systems are unavailable.
  • Scalability. Capacity requirements change as the data center expands and customer demand increases.
  • Long-term reliability. Power systems must remain maintainable, serviceable, and dependable throughout their operating life.

Solution Design And Collaboration

EcoDataCenter collaborated closely with Elektromatik (part of BOS Power) and Rolls Royce Power Systems (RRPS) to design a customised emergency power solution that aligned with their specific needs and vision.

The collaboration combined expertise in emergency power, system integration and project execution to develop a solution around EcoDataCenter's operational requirements.

A key aspect of the solution was the implementation of a distributed redundant topology, designed to deliver reliable power to EcoDataCenter’s customers. Elektromatik and RRPS provided end-to-end responsibility, and integrated project management and high-quality products for the entire emergency power solution.

The integrated delivery simplified project execution and enabled the system components to be installed within the data center building, eliminating the need for external containers and pipes.

Mission-critical backup power for data centers

BOS Power provides integrated diesel generator solutions designed for demanding applications where uptime is non-negotiable. From system design and integration to commissioning and lifecycle support, the solution can be tailored to your site's capacity, redundancy, and operational requirements.

Advantages & Benefits

From a design perspective, the solution catered to EcoDataCenter’s preferences, with all components installed inside the building, thereby maintaining a clean and aesthetically pleasing facility.

In terms of technical requirements, the Emergency Power Solution was designed to deliver the required power within a specified timeframe in the event of a grid failure. This met EcoDataCenter’s uptime requirements, ensuring uninterrupted operations for their customers.

The solution’s scalability and flexibility allow for future growth and expansion, accommodating changing needs and demands. By adopting a building block approach, EcoDataCenter can easily adjust the size and capacity of their infrastructure as their business evolves, optimizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Sustainability forms the fundamental focus of both parties involved in this collaboration. The implemented solution has paved the way for the potential to utilize advancements in sustainable practices, such as the use of fossil-free diesel alternatives such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).

Additionally, the heat generated by the emergency power solution can potentially be harnessed and repurposed, contributing to the overall energy efficiency of the data center.

Key benefits include:

  • Reliable 24/7 operations: Backup power infrastructure helps protect critical data center operations against grid disturbances and outages.

  • Scalable capacity: The solution can be adapted as EcoDataCenter's infrastructure and power requirements develop.

  • Redundancy and resilience: Multiple systems and backup capacity reduce operational risk and support continuity.

  • Long-term partnership: Ongoing collaboration gives EcoDataCenter access to technical expertise, maintenance, and system support as requirements change.

  • Operational efficiency: Planning, service, and system design help reduce unnecessary operational risk over the lifetime of the installation.

Collaborative Partnership

TThe collaboration between EcoDataCenter, Elektromatik and RRPS is built around ongoing technical dialogue, project planning and coordination. This enables the partners to plan capacity and system requirements together as EcoDataCenter's infrastructure develops.

A time-to-market (TTM) approach supports coordinated project execution, agreed delivery schedules and efficient resource planning.

By looking ahead and planning for future growth, the partnership ensures timely delivery of required solutions and the ability to respond effectively to unforeseen risks.
